There are numerous indications for eyelid surgery including correction of entropion and ectropion, resection of tumors, repair of lacerations, etc. Learn the principles of surgery of this critical organ.

In this wetlab, you will learn and practice the most common eyelid surgical procedures, including temporary tarsorrhaphy; wedge resection for removal of small eyelid tumors, using figure of 8 closure for perfect eyelid margin apposition; H-plasty for eyelid reconstruction following resection of larger eyelid tumors; the modified Hotz Celsus technique for entropion repair; the “Stades technique” to alleviate the problems caused by excessive skin folds in breeds such as Shar Pei and Chow Chow; the pocket technique to replace the tear gland of the third eyelid (“cherry eye”); and third eyelid flap. Each procedure will be preceded by a brief presentation of the clinical problems, the indications for surgery, step-by-step description of the procedure, potential pitfalls, practical tips, etc. A short movie will be screened, and then you will practice the procedure on bovine eyes/eyelids. Surgical sets, suture material and all supplies will be provided, as well as a few loupes so you can experience the advantages of operation with magnification. Following the wetlab, you will be able to surgically manage a wide variety of eyelid diseases.
